Greenseams Wetland Restoration on the Little Menomonee Creek (WI)

Organization: Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District

Lake/River Basin: Lake Michigan

Project Description: The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) established a partnership with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) to restore 66 acres of land acquired through the MMSD Greenseams Program in Mequon, Wisconsin. The property is located within the Menomonee River watershed, which is a direct drainage area to Lake Michigan. This project will restore the hydrology and wildlife habitat of previously drained wetlands within the Little Menomonee Creek watershed. The property contains drained wetlands currently in agricultural production that will be restored to a wooded wetland environment. The 25 wetland acres currently existing on the site will be monitored for presence of invasive species, followed by work to eliminate the invasive species present and also reduce the opportunity for invasive species to spread to the newly restored areas. An additional 30 acres of upland will be taken out of agricultural production and restored to native vegetation. This will provide valuable floodwater storage and streamside buffers that will benefit water quality and wildlife.

Flooded agricultural field to be restored to natural vegetation.

Project will restore stream areas to this quality.
